Episode 2.20
“Witness”
Meh. A mediocre episode in an otherwise decent season. I can’t muster much enthusiasm to write about this episode because it literally evoked no real reaction from me.
There is a cliched tale about a super strong freak of the week who has been using meteor rock instead of steroids to get a major league baseball contract. Clark witnesses Eric stealing meteor rock from a Luthorcorp truck, thus the witty title of the episode. Clark works on getting him imprisoned, but Eric turns the tide and threatens Clark and those he loves. He attempts to murder Clark by sticking him in a furnace but the man of steel comes out unscathed.
Lex and Lionel share another one of their verbal sparring sessions which are always a joy as the two actors have great chemistry between them.
The subplot involves Chloe and Clark falling out over Clark always putting Lana first. It’s a very 90210 moment and really is not worth watching as you know it’ll be resolved by episode’s end.
In another 90210 subplot, Lana has to cut her father out of her life when his wife threatens to divorce him over his newfound love for Lana. It’s petty and while not out of the realm of possibilities, it all seems to happen so fast that it’s hard to care. Henry Small has not been around long enough for it to matter to viewers although I guess there is some empathy for Lana.
The only interesting portion of the show is at the end when Lionel Luthor helps save the Torch after it’s vandalized and offers Chloe a column with the Daily Planet. Chloe is understandably skeptical, but takes him up on his offer.
Oh…and Eric is played by the oldest son on Home Improvement. The rest of the show went by without notice.
