Episode 2.18
“Visitor”
Visitor was another solid episode for the second season. It was both intriguing and well crafted…for the most part.
We are quickly introduced to Cyrus Krupp, a loner who doesn’t even attempt to befriend anyone. We learn that he believes he is an alien. What makes it slightly more believable is that he believes he is an alien from Krypton who came to Earth in the meteor shower.
Well of course, this intrigues Clark to no end, especially when Cyrus displays heat vision like powers.
Meanwhile, Lana reaches out to Clark in hopes of boarding Whitney’s horse, Tyson on his farm. It’s a signal of the tension between the two lightening which is a good thing. As much as Clana is a bit of a drag at times, their having issues with each other over stupid things is worse.
Having another character around that may be an alien served as a treat for Clark as he sees how others would react to meeting an alien. Chloe seems as if she would be excited and pleased while later on Lana admits that she would be a bit freaked out…which of course leads to Clark solidifying that he doesn’t want to tell her.
We learn that Cyrus’ heat vision was not a power, but instead a well designed trick. But we discover that Cyrus does have a power, the power to heal. As Tyson gets suddenly sick from an unknown source, Cyrus is able to heal him almost instantly.
Lex’s subplot involves his relationship with Dr. Bryce and how the press is hounding them making Helen uncomfortable. Furthermore as Helen moves in, she is disconcerted that there is a locked room that she doesn’t have access to after Lex promised her full access to his life. At the end of the day, Lex lets her in and we discover very quickly that Lex is even more interested in the Kents than previously thought. His research into alien life centers much on Clark.
In another subplot, Martha worries about her pregnancy and seeks help from Dr. Bryce against Jonathan’s wishes due to her closeness with Lex and the involvement of Clark’s ship in healing her.
At the end of the episode, Cyrus had built a very large transmitter and on the night he believed he had to send the transmission he was attacked by the school bullies and as Clark saves him, one of the bullies is accidentally killed when his neck is snapped. Clark convinces Cyrus to save the bullies’ life even though it means that Cyrus will miss the appropriate time to send his transmission. Clark is inspired by the choice made even though it is confirmed that Cyrus was not an alien, but instead witnessed Clark’s arrival and somehow overtime began to believe that it was his story as a defense mechanism.
Overall a good epsiode in terms of self discovery in more subtle fashion.
