Episode 1.20
“Obscura”

“Obscura” is another example of good intentioned, poorly drawn out storytelling. While there is a FotW this week….it’s Lana. While horseback riding with Whitney, they hear an explosion and go to investigate. They find authorities on the scene but a second explosion sends Lana flying and she gets covered in meteor fragments.
So wait a second, just having the meteor on you can give you abilities? Because soon after, she has a vision where she looks through a kidnapper’s eyes as he takes Chloe.
And that’s never explained truly. It’s quite a localized power. Her power is to see through the eyes of one individual.
A lot of leaps of faith there.
The gist of the tale is a simple but decent one. Deput Gary Watts is a too ambitious cop, who begins to commit crimes in order to “solve” them and be rewarded. His plot to kidnap then find Chloe was foiled when Lana is able to pinpoint where she is and Clark is able to rescue her…in a very Lassie-like fashion.
“I saw a big windmill”
“It must be…”
So as Deputy Watts is aware of Lana’s sudden abilities, he decides to take her down, but Clark again saves the day.
It’s not horrible, just not great.
The sidebar tale of Lex trying to gain Jonathan Kent’s trust or at least his approval is a little more interesting. Lex tries to pay the Kent’s back for the livestock and land they lost during “Nicodemus”. Jonathan at first accepts the check and Lex’s hand but later when he discovers that Lex is testing the ground where Clark’s ship had landed, he grows angry and protective and gives Lex the check back.
It’s childish and immature. But it is very real so it works well.
Kent’s worry is very real as Lex and his team first discover the key that is a part of Clark’s fallen spaceship.
Overall it is a mediocre episode. Very run of the mill.
